Mr. Steven T. Miller, Acting Commissioner
1111 Constitution Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20224
Dear Commissioner Miller:
Today we mailed a full and complete Form 1040 together with our tax payment. This, we understand, is one of the obligations of U.S. citizenship.
A second obligation of citizenship is to let our leaders know our views about how they are spending the money we provide. This is particularly important during a time such as this when their decisions, reached on a bipartisan basis, are leading our country in the wrong direction. We will meet this obligation by sending them copies of this letter, as noted below.
A third obligation is to God, whose authority is above that of our government’s, and whose intent for us here on earth was revealed in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. It was Jesus who qualified the claims of every government when he said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”
As we seek to meet this third obligation, we recall that the U.S. government is now in the 12th year of its war in Afghanistan; continues its killing of civilian Pakistanis and its promotion of anti-American sentiment there; continues its killing of Yemeni civilians and its promotion of anti-American sentiment there; continues to use the violence of covert operations, arms, and logistical support to effect regime change in Syria and Iran; continues to provide material support for the oppression of Palestinian people by the State of Israel; and continues to bully any nation that seeks to chart its own path. In short, our leaders are using the money we provide to pursue an aggressive, belligerent and violent policy abroad.
Because our completion of Form 1040 and the payment of taxes render us complicit in this evil, we file under protest. Furthermore, as a witness against the violence and deceit that is causing great harm to our nation and much loss to others, we again support and participate in the tax protest of 1040 for Peace and all those who withhold payment of a portion of the amount due.
You are not to blame for this countries ruinous foreign policy, Acting Commissioner Miller; our elected leaders are to blame and we too if we remain silent.
